About the event
Seminars in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Maternal mortality is unacceptably high. About 295 000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2017. The vast majority of these deaths (94%) occurred in low-resource settings, and most could have been prevented. Deaths due to Non Pregnancy Related Infections remain the leading cause of maternal mortality for the triennium 2017-2019. However, from the year 2011, there has been a continual reduction in both numbers of maternal deaths and maternal mortality ratios, because of the implementation of live long antiretroviral treatment for HIV infection and the prevention of mother to child transmission programmes in South Africa. This webinar will discuss early signs of infections during pregnancy, encourage early detection and timely treatment. The importance of good hygiene and infection prevention practices will be emphasized.
